Today I woke up and showered as usual, but unusually as I looked out my window we drifted past a glacier. It felt surreal, but it’s a scene I want to embed in my memory forever. The world’s beauty can truly be breath taking. Alaska has exceeded my expectations, not just in beauty, but the sheer size, vastness and isolation. It’s also reassuring to see parts of the world still untouched and ruined by man and development.
A trip away from family and friends and a break from your normal routine is so refreshing and dare i say invigorating for your mind and soul. Not just a wife, mother and daughter, but as a person again, making choices and decisions that only relate to you and about you. Connecting with your girlfriends and actually being able to finish an uninterrupted conversation and concentrate fully on the task at hand, one at a time was a forgotten art after children. Not that I would have my life any other way, but it is refreshing to discover just me again. The decisions at hand are about which shore excursions to take, which restaurants to eat at, what activity to partake or not partake in, and of course cleaning and housework are strictly banned.
The saving, planning and organisation thus far have all been so worth it, even if just for my peace of mind and the renewal of discovering just me again. It’s a totally different experience holidaying with your girlfriends rather than your family because you can relax and feel quilt free. I do enjoy the family holidays but this is something I recommend every woman do and I will be planning the next one from the time i get home! For now I will continue to enjoy being pampered on the seas around Alaska.
Tonight dinner on the Captains table, next stop Kechikan and the girls first experience travelling in a seaplane over the Alaskan fjords, our only decision what to wear!
Stay tuned for our next adventure!
